Why Your LinkedIn Content Isn't Getting Engagement

And 5 ways you can fix it

In partnership with

Welcome back, Digital CreAItives!

In this edition, we're diving into what I consider to be one the most important aspects of LinkedIn success: formatting your content properly.

Trust me, it's not just about aesthetics.

Proper formatting can significantly boost engagement and make your posts stand out.

I’m going to walk you through a step-by-step process of how you can fix your formatting.

But first:

💬 Reply to this email with your best LinkedIn advice for me. I’m always open to learning something new!

Let me start out by saying:

I know this is an unpopular opinion….

But believe it or not, your LinkedIn post should NOT read like a novel.

Paragraph after paragraph after paragra……zzzZZZzzz

You get the idea.

I've taken one of my posts and used proper formatting techniques for one and more traditional formatting for the other.

Both of these contain the same content but are presented very differently.

Be honest, which are you more likely to read and which are you more likely to skim?

Let’s get into how you can fix your formatting.

Here are the 5 key components of a great post:

1. Use a catchy hook

2. Leave blanks

3. Use bullets

4. Be concise

5. Use a CTA

Let’s expand on each of these topics a bit further:

 1. Use a Catchy Hook 🪝

The hook is your chance to grab your reader’s attention immediately.

You want to either use a great image or a phase to draw them in.

Phrases like:

“How to…”

“5 Ways to…”

“This is how…”

“This 1 trick will…”

“Here’s 5 Lessons…”

These are all ways to draw your reader in and show you will provide value.

Start with a bold statement or a question.

Make your audience curious and intrigued.

If your hook isn't strong enough, your audience might just scroll past.

Try experimenting with different types of hooks and see what works best with your audience.

Remember, using a great hook with a compelling image = ENGAGEMENT

2. Leave Space Between Lines 🪐

Dense blocks of text are mind-numbingly boring (as you saw).

Nobody has that kind of attention to read through paragraphs of text especially when other people’s content is less wordy and easier to scan.

One way to fix this is by using linebreaks.

Using line breaks after each sentence makes your post more readable.

It also makes it visually appealing.

This technique also helps keep the reader engaged.

Short, crisp sentences are easier to follow.

They also make your message clear and concise.

The white space created by line breaks gives the reader's eyes a break and makes your content look less overwhelming.

3. Use Bullets or Lists 📝

Bullets make your content:

→ More engaging

→ Easier to read

→ Emphasized

→ Skimmable

→ Structured

Bulleted lists break down information into bite-sized pieces.

They highlight key points effectively.

They also add variety and make your posts look less monotonous.

Try organizing lists by word length, either ascending or descending (like I did above).

This subtle change can make your content more visually appealing.

Bullets are great for summarizing information.

They allow your readers to quickly grasp the main points.

This is especially useful for readers who are skimming through content (aka everyone on LinkedIn).

Next time you post try and use some kind of bulleted list.

4. Be Clear and Concise 📌

Clarity ensures your message is delivered effectively.

Capture attention by being straightforward.

Do this by avoiding jargon and complex sentences.

Your audience should understand your message without any confusion.

Edit your content to remove unnecessary words.

Focus on delivering your message quickly and efficiently.

A clear and concise message enhances comprehension.

It also makes it easier for your audience to engage with your content.

Remember: Less is more!

5. Use a CTA (Call to Action) 🗣️

A CTA prompts your audience to take action.

Typical CTAs on LinkedIn look like:

Get Started

Learn How

Comment

Repost

A good CTA is clear and compelling.

It guides your audience on what to do next.

It should be aligned with your content's goal.

Make sure your CTA stands out.

CTAs are a great way to drive engagement and conversions.

They also encourage your audience to interact with your content.

Always end your post with some kind of CTA, even if it’s just asking a question.
