BREAKING NEWS
Apple Nears Deal with OpenAI
satellytes
Big news came from Apple yesterday (5/11), as they are reportedly close to a deal with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone. This deal could potentially bring AI capabilities to all Apple devices in the future should both parties come to an agreement.
The deal would allow Apple to offer a more advanced AI assistant on its devices, potentially rivaling Google's Gemini as it is already integrated into Google Pixel phones.
Apple has been exploring ways to improve Siri for quite some time, and by integrating ChatGPT into the iPhone, it would give Siri a huge boost in addition to allowing for more natural flowing conversations.
The report suggests that the deal is not yet finalized, but the two companies are in “advanced talks.”
Why it’s important: As Apple continues to drop hints, we can likely expect to see more talk of AI integrations and innovations ahead of WWDC in June as Apple shifts to an AI-focused strategy going forward.
BREAKTHROUGHS
Google’s Deepmind AlphaFold 3
On Wednesday this past week, the Google DeepMind team announced it had developed and released a new AI model called AlphaFold 3 (somebody please nickname this AF3). This new model can predict the structure and interactions of all life’s proteins at a molecular level potentially leading to new discoveries.
AlphaFold 3 builds on AlphaFold 2 knowledge which was released in 2020 and has already been used to make discoveries in vaccines, cancer treatments, and enzyme design.
This model can predict protein structures, which allows it to learn from vast amounts of data and then generalize it into new categories and unseen proteins.
The DeepMind team has taken things a step further and made AF3 open-source and made it available for researchers and scientists to use and build on.
Why it’s Important: By using AlphaFold 3, scientists now have the potential to accelerate new discoveries and drug development, as well as find new applications in fields such as synthetic biology and material science.
UPDATES
OpenAI Enters in the Search Game
artnet news
According to several reports earlier this week, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to announce a new search engine on Monday (5/13). Here’s what you need to know.
OpenAI's new search engine will tap into its AI technology and will supposedly give more accurate and relevant results than Google.
The search engine will be available on OpenAI's website and will be free to use, with plans to generate revenue through advertising and partnerships.
OpenAI's search engine will also integrate its chatbot technology, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and engage in conversations with the AI.
Why it’s important: Currently, Google dominates the search engine market but we are beginning to see a shift towards more AI search engines like Perplexity. This could pose a significant challenge to Google's current dominance.
PROMPT OF THE WEEK:
A prompt for a prompt:
Imagine you're guiding a lost explorer through uncharted territory related to [insert topic]. Your goal is to help them craft a clear, concise message (the AI prompt) that will create the perfect guide (the AI response) for their journey.
INNOVATION
AI is Taking Flight
engineering.com
The US Air Force has developed a new AI system that reportedly can defeat human pilots in dogfighting simulations, marking a significant milestone in the development of autonomous combat tech.
The AI system, fittingly called "ALPHA," was developed by a team at the University of Cincinnati and uses advanced algorithms and machine learning to adapt to rapidly changing situations.
In dogfight simulations, ALPHA was able to outmaneuver and even defeat human pilots, including experienced Air Force pilots, with a success rate of 105-0 (I like those odds).
The Air Force plans to use ALPHA to improve human pilot training and potentially develop autonomous combat systems for use in the near future.
Why it’s important: AI systems like ALPHA demonstrate superior performance in combat simulations that could potentially save the lives of pilots as well as bring on a new era of autonomous warfare.
